XFINITY is perhaps best known as an internet service provider. It offers high speed connections for optimal downloading and streaming. Now you can also watch movies through XFINITY On Demand, but how good is the service and is it worth the price? Well, we’ve a few reservations.
This might be a popular site but we’re not convinced by everything we’ve seen. For starters, our standardised test to see how much a movie is to watch (namely, “Hunger Games: Catching Fire”) delivered by far the most expensive viewing price, around double for standard viewing and triple for HD viewing. Not a good start. So what about the packages that are available? Well the site is quite unclear as to whether you need to pay for their internet services to access their On Demand packages. Their internet services sound good, although they are also not particularly cheap.
The layout of the site is pretty terrible. The home page for movies is simply a gallery of movies which grows as you scroll down. You can perform a search or browse by genre, but this could be made more clear and simplified. In contrast, we did like that they include a range of clips, trailers, interviews and additional information for a number of movies, which are pleasant additions for anyone who is interested in knowing more about a film. You can also check out ratings from a number of top movie websites including Rotten Tomato and IMDB.
The selection of movies is fine but in no way superior to other sites in this category. It’s also not the most versatile system and they offer little in the way of apps for mobile devices. If you decide to take out a contract for the internet and/or TV package with xFinity.com then you can find out when movies are showing on the television, which is somewhat useful. You can also opt to purchase sports, family and live TV packages (or a Latino option if you’re so inclined) but we’d recommend having a look at what’s on offer with each of those before you agree to a purchase. Help can be found online or you can contact the sales team directly.
Generally speaking we weren’t particularly impressed by Xfinity on Demand. Its site isn’t very well organised, it offers a pretty standard choice of movies, quality is variable and it’s expensive. If you already have a contract with them for your internet connection then they may be worth a second chance, but otherwise we’d avoid them.
