If you’ve not heard of Disney then where have you been hiding? It's is one of the biggest and most beloved movie industries, primarily focused on producing children’s movies but they’re often just as adored by adults. From classics such as Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty, to modern adaptations such as Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and The Princess and The Frog, there’s a lot of magical stuff to choose from. The site is fun and well designed, with a few really engaging extras for dedicated members. However it’s not cheap and they only sell and rent their own movies, so if you’re interesting in non-Disney movies then you’ll need to set your magic carpet flying elsewhere.
The great value of Disney is the quality of its productions. If a movie has Disney stamped on it then you know (within reason) that it’s going to be a high quality product. Their movies are available on DVD and Bluray, or by download. There are also a variety of services to choose from. You can opt to join the Disney Movie Club, paying a monthly fee which allows you to receive the latest Disney movies and also get a few discounts in stores and sometimes when visiting Disney World. If you’re interested in downloading movies to watch as often as you like then this is done through iTunes, although you can access those movies from the Disney site. Video on Demand (VOD) allows you to watch Disney movies whenever you want to, whilst Pay Per View is similar but you can only watch the movies when they’re scheduled to play on the Disney channels.
Unless you find a DVD or Bluray during a sale, Disney isn’t cheap. Download prices vary but again they’re relatively expensive, and the movie club can be pretty expensive. There are benefits to being a member though, including discounts and “second screen”, an app which allows you to watch a movie on one screen whilst playing exclusive games (linked to the movie) on another device. This is a fun way to engage kids in learning whilst they watch their favourite characters on screen.
The short version of our review is this: Disney offers high quality but you pay for it. They also only offer their own movies so you would still need to subscribe elsewhere if you want to watch anything other than Disney movies. If you’re a massive fan then this site is worth exploring, but it’s hard to recommend it to general movie enthusiasts.
