Over the past few decades Asian cinema has made a big splash here in Britain. Whether it’s Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Lucy Lui, Joan Chen or John Yang, the movies of Asia are diverse and exciting, but not always readily available. Many of the Asian movies received in the UK are Hollywood blockbusters or co-productions between Asian and Western production companies. So where can you get your hands on the movies that people are watching over in Asia? Tiger Cinema may be your answer.
Tiger Cinema specialises in Japanese, Korean, Chinese and other Asian film and TV, allowing you to stream direct to your device or to pay for a copy which you can watch over and over. You can choose to browse movies based on their country of origin and genre, or to search for a title, actor or director. Each movie comes with an English description and you can also watch trailers. Members are able to review movies too, helping you to decide which ones you might prefer to watch.
The site offers a few rewards schemes to members and you can also buy gifts for friends and family. Members can also request titles that aren’t currently available on the site, which makes it a very useful place to visit if there’s a movie you just can’t seem to locate. Over all this makes it a useful resource. We did have some difficulties navigating the site, not so much in terms of it being complex, but pages sometimes loaded very slowly or needed refreshing. This clears up somewhat once you’ve signed up but it can become quite tiresome. It’s also not the most professionally designed site around, but it does the job it sets out to.
We were pleased to see that the site creators had included a few social elements and subsections for users who wish to find out more about their movies. You can visit the “stars” section which tells you all about a range of Asian actresses and actors, or join in an online chat about whatever movie topic you prefer. There is a video section where you can watch trailers and playlists, as well as a news page and newsletter. These aren’t astounding but at least they’re there and offer you the opportunity to get more involved with the movies you watch.
If you’re looking for Asian movies and TV shows then we think that TigerCinema.com is a good place to visit. However it won’t suit everyone, particularly if you want more of a selection than just Asian shows.
