Editor's Verdict: LoveFilm.com is the number 1 film download site in this category. It's a really slick and well thought out concept, offering a range of subscription packages to rent DVDs, console games and stream films and TV to your pc, internet connected TV or Playstation. You can also pay per view. Setting up an account with LoveFilm.com is quick and easy. You supply your personal details (valid email address required) and address to send DVD rentals. You'll also need to submit your credit card details even for the free trial period (as security only) but you won't be charged anything unless you don't return DVDs. At the time of this review there were 4773 films online to stream for those with a subscription package. There were also 1039 pay per view titles to stream and 56 films that you can stream for free. This all adds up to a massive choice of Hollywood movies, world cinema and independent titles, documentaries and TV series. Rather than paying just for what you purchase and download, LoveFilm.com offers a range of packages. Starting at the least expensive, the Starter package allows you to rent 2 DVDs per month (you can only rent one DVD at a time), with no streaming. There's also the option of games rental for an extra £1.00 per month). The Light Use Package entitles you to 3 DVDs per month (1 out at a time) and 2 hours streaming TV and films. The Occasional Treat Package gives you 4 DVDs per month (2 out at a time), 4 hours film streaming and optional games rentral for an extra £2.04 per month. We then move from the 'lightweight' packages to those that offer substantially more in terms of streaming films. The Film Lovers Package offers unlimited DVDs (1 out at a time), unlimited streaming and the option to rent 2 DVDs at a time for an extra £3.28 per month. The Film and Games Package gives you unlimited DVD rentals (2 out at a time) and unlimited streaming and games rentals. Finally, the Ultimate Package offers unlimited DVDs, streaming and games and allows you to rent 3 DVDs at a time. There should be a package to suit your usage, though do be aware that anything below the Film Lovers Package is rather restrictive in terms of film streaming. The great news is that whichever package you choose, you get a 14 day free trial. There are a number of browsing options, including a keyword search to look for particular titles, actors or directors and preconfigured one click searches that list 'just released' or 'just added' films. You can also browse an A-Z list of all films or browse by genre (e.g. 'documentaries', 'family' and 'television', etc.). You'll also find plenty of collections (films with similar themes) to choose depending on your mood (e.g. 'staff picks', 'adrenaline rush' and 'hangover viewing'). The minimum setup you need to watch online is an up to date browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari or Opera), Windows XP, Vista, Seven or Mac OS 10.3 or above, 512 MB RAM and an internet connection speed above 2Mbps. You'll also need Javascript and Flash enabled. To rent DVDS you simply select the ones you want to watch, which are then sent by first class postage. You don't need to order each DVD separately. What you do is access your rentals list and browse and add titles from the collection using the 'rent' or 'add' buttons. Once you've created a list of titles there's nothing else you need to do; your first order will be dispatched and each time you return a DVD the next film from your list will automatically be sent to you. Rental DVDs are not sent sequentially in accordance with your list, but will depend on availability, so it's a good idea to have around 10 titles on your list. As there will be some films you want to see more than others you can indicate which films in your list are high, medium or low priority. You can then watch them when it suits you and return them in the prepaid envelope that comes with your order. When returned, your next DVD order is dispatched. Games rentals work in exactly the same way as DVD film rentals. You can rent games for the GameCube, Playstation 2, PSP, XBox and XBox 360 consoles. With reference to streaming, you can stream films to your pc, internet enabled TV or Playstation 3 console. Films are viewed via the LoveFilm Player. Moving the mouse will bring up the control bar by which you can control the film you're watching. Simply browse the collection of films online and click to select. You can see all of your selected films if you click the 'my online films' tab. If you have a lighter use package you can still stream films beyond the limit imposed by your package, but you will receive an additional charge. It's also important to note that some premium titles are not included in your membership package and you will be charged an additional fee, even if you pay for unlimited streaming. This is allegedly due to licensing laws imposed by the film makers, but you'll be informed before streaming where this is the case. It's also possible to watch up to 3 films concurrently when streaming, but the first will automatically stop if a fourth film is played. However, you can't watch films outside of the UK, nor can you download films. This means that you must be connected to the internet in order to be able to stream movies. If you're unhappy with the package you subscribe to, it's easy to just upgrade or downgrade to a different package. If you don't want to subscribe to a package you can also pay per view for films online. However, it soon becomes a false economy if you watch more than one or two films per month and the membership packages offer much better value.
